Labour story - baby number 2 (Pulmonary embolism)

Following my blood clot diagnoses we was expecting our birth plans to totally change, in which they did. I no longer could have a home birth as i was classed as a high risk, not a high risk because of our baby but high risk because of me. We went in for an appointment with a baby consultant at our main hospital on the 5/1/18 in which we had a big discussion on what would be our best options. She spoke about being induced or waiting until it naturally happened, but we couldn't make our minds up there and then and needed to sleep on it.

We went back home and spoke about being induced and thought it was the best way to go as we could make sure to stop my injections 24 hours before i go into labour. back to the hospital we went on the 9/1/18 in which i got examined and was told i was already 2cm dilated (38 weeks and 1 day) and that if we was going for a induction it would have to be sooner rather than later as id go into natural labour anyways. We told her we would prefer a induction as we could prepare and it was the safest option for us and she said back a haematology consultant had already wrote out a plan for us and that we was definitely going to be induced! so i'm pretty happy we had chosen that option rather than said we wanted to go natural.

Our consultant rang the ward to book me in for a induction and she booked us in for the 11/1/18 my birthday of course and said i needed to stop my injections 24 hours before and that i couldn't be induced any later than the 11th as i would of been going over the 24 hour time period. Once we had got home the nerves started kicking in as 2 more days and we was going to be induced and have our baby. As the 11th came we packed our bags ready and waited for a phone call. I got a phone call around 11am on the 11th saying to take a injection as i was 4th in queue for a bed on the ward. All i kept thinking was but if i take a injection i couldn't be induced that day as i wouldn't of been going 24 hours? I asked the midwife on the phone and she said she had spoken to my consultant and they had decided 12 hours were long enough. Crazy how they can change their minds when a plan was already prepared. anyways i had to wait for another phone call to see if i needed to take another injection as i was on 2 Fragmin injections a day. I got another phone call around 9pm saying to take another injection and that their ward was running slow and i was 2nd in queue, i wasn't going to be induced on the 11th. Panic started to set in.. i thought i was going to be induced on the 11th. I had to wait for another phone call the next morning..

But my body and baby had other plans..
4am on the 12th of January i started with contractions, i was very sure if they were 100% contractions but they felt different, i think i just knew. I woke my partner up and said i think i'm starting with contractions. The pain kept coming and i knew to get my bags get dressed and get straight into the car. My first baby came very fast and i barely made it to the hospital so i wanted to make sure i would get there with plenty of time this time round. Around 4.30am i rang the labour unit and said i was going into labour and that i should of been coming in for a induction, the midwife told me to take a bath and some paracetamol in which i didn't cause i knew my body, i told her i was already 2cm 2 days ago and that i was getting in the car. We set off to our hospital which is 20/30 minutes away and we monitored the pain and at this point we knew it was contractions and that they was getting closer and closer.

5am we arrived at the hospital to which i got examined, i was 5cm dilated and was given gas and air and some paracetamol. From then on my contractions got so intense so quickly and i was sent round to the delivery ward.

7.31am our baby boy arrived!
weighing 6Ib15oz
called Sebastian Redgwick
2nd degree tear
natural delivery

So after all the fuss of arranging a induction, little Sebastian had other plans and definitely didn't want to share his birthday. He's perfect!

Fragmin injections carry on until the 8/3/18 but now once a day.
I'm very grateful to the doctors at our hospital for finding my blood clots and saving preventing them from travelling and causing damage.

Any future pregnancies i will have to take blood thinning injections everyday until 3 months postpartum.
